How can a GNU/Linux user approach a consumer device as an unknown computer rather than the appliance it was meant to be?
Max O’Cull1 can tell us how! He will walk us through:
- opening a consumer IP camera,
- identifying the system-on-a-chip (SoC) and its flash memory,
- using a logic analyzer to find the device’s Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART — i.e. the means of directly communicating with the chips),
observe the boot loader and Linux boot process, - preserve and inspect the firmware,
- look at its network behavior, and
- ultimately replace the vendor firmware with an Open Source alternative such as Thingino.
The theme that Max wants to share at Central INdiana Linux User Group’s (CINLUG’s) Wednesday, November 4th meeting is a repeatable methodology for understanding and taking control of the embedded Linux devices that we own! The meeting starts at 18:30 (6:30 PM) EST.
CINLUG thanks Moser Consulting for hosting our meetings at their facility2. (There will be a phone number at the entrance to call to be let into the building.) The meeting will be simultaneously broadcast over this Jitsi Meet URL for those who cannot attend in person. (Though in-person attendance is encouraged. Attendees often head over to a nearby restaurant, afterward, for drinks and camaraderie!)
CINLUG meetings are the 1st Wednesday of every month, so please block that night off in your calendar to keep it available. You are also encouraged to sign up for our mailing lists and to follow us on our various social media sites3 to receive announcements and participate in discussions.
