Newbie needs help with Kubuntu 6.10 on a Gateway Laptop
I recently installed Kubuntu 6.10 on my Gateway MX7525 Laptop and I realized beforehand that I would need the modem driver. I also knew that I would have to download it in windows because I have no other way to connect to the internet than dial-up. I cannot get the driver installed. Kaffeine also said that it is missing a plug-in when I tried to see if I could watch a DVD.
Would it be easier to download WINE and get the Windows version of my driver? Would that even work? If not, is there something like WINE that would allow me to do that?
Can someone help me?

Ubuntu 7.04 Fiest Fawn just came out, perhaps that has built in what you need for your modem?
I don't know much about modems, but if you come to the next meeting I'm sure someone can give you a copy of 7.04 for you to try...I'll burn a few if I can remember to.
Cheers,
Dave Brown

According to the specs I found, the modem is: 00:14.6 Modem: ATI Technologies Inc ATI SB400 - AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02) (Modem: CXT AC97 Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP)
The Windows driver most likely won't work. I'll see if I can determine what you need to get the modem working.
As for DVDs, try going to http://www.getautomatix.com - it should have the extra packages you need.
