Firefox is getting away with murder

Vin¢

I don't know what changed, but I must be doing something wrong.

Time: Now.
Setting: Compaq Presario M2000, 1.5GHz Celeron, 512Mb RAM, Kubuntu 6.06. Typ. usage: 1 OO doc, 1 Firefox w/ 2 tabs, 1 Konqueror for file browsing.

Since my last debacle (rdiff-backup referencing its own backup folder), top has become a very good friend.

What my friend tells me now, is that firefox-bin is intermittently taking up between 0 and 60% of my CPU, with occasional gusts up to 89%. Sometimes it'll crash afterward, sometimes it just boggs the machine down until I have to hard reset.

Not cool, particularly not during finals week when I have eighteen pages due Monday am.

Any help would be appreciated,
Vin¢

Perhaps it is the sites that you frequent using flash ads that are causing you fits?

Java

I've also had Java applets take over the browser and lock up the machine. I typically leave Java disabled to work around that.
