Depending on how old your system is, you might have to use scsi emulation on the cdrw...append hdx=ide-scsi to your boot line in /boot/grub/menu.lst and replace the "x" with whatever the cdrw drive is on your system.
Then try cdrecord -scanbus to see if it can see it...if cdrecord can see it, then xcdroast will...because it uses cdrecord to do the actual writes.

2.6.8 is 2.6.8. You may need to add hdc=ide-scsi (or whatever your burner is) to enable scsi emulation. Later 2.6 kernels no longer use the ide-scsi layer.
