How do I enable RSS feeds on a Postnuke site?

Greetings,

I'm new to things Linux, MySQL, PHP, etc., so have mercy! :)

Despite the above qualifications, I administer a Postnuke site for the Indiana SPJ chapter using version 0.7.5.0. I have seen numerous references to RSS being built in to Postnuke, but I haven't figured out how to enable it so that people can subscribe to our site. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I got an error...

Hey guys, when I try to access to my backend.php page I got an XML parsing error: "trash behind document's element in .../backend.php ..., Line 2, Column 1: "

How may I fix that?

My page is http://usuarios.lycos.es/blackrider2006/

Thanks.

backend.php

It looks like your host is the problem. They're adding a javascript ad to every page - this messes up the RSS feed. I don't know if there's a way to fix that without moving to another webhost.

RSS issues

Hey guys,

I am having problems trying to enable my RSS feed. I added the code to my site so that the Firefox syndicate button shows now, but when I try to add a live bookmark it says "Live Bookmark feed failed to load."

I also get a the following error when I try to view my backend file with a browser:

XML Parsing Error: junk after document element
Location: http://www.thefoodlog.com/backend.php
Line Number 218, Column 1: Response:
^

Please help!

nevermind

I figured it out.... my backend.php file had been modified. I think I added some code awhile back, trying to follow some instructions from technorati.com to do automatic pinging or something.

I just re-uploaded the original and now it is all fine! : )

Re:How do I enable RSS feeds on a Postnuke site?

You're welcome. Buying that Postnuke book would be a really good way to support open source. The more these things sell, the more new titles will come (and we definitely want that).

Postnuke was free, our help is free -- maybe SPJ could spend a few bucks and buy the book for you to use?
Under Administration > Settings > in the "Footer Messages" box, add this code:
Oh yes, that did it. Thanks much! --eric

Re:How do I enable RSS feeds on a Postnuke site?

Under Administration > Settings > in the "Footer Messages" box, add this code: [code:1] <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Indy Pro SPJ Newsfeed" href="backend.php"> [/code:1] This will make a little orange RSS icon appear in Firefox's status bar. You can click on it to subscribe to the newsfeed. People that want to subscribe via Thunderbird or some other RSS aggregator can just enter the URL of the feed manually. - T.

Re:How do I enable RSS feeds on a Postnuke site?

Thanks gents.

Let's see...I've added a link similar to the one on your site by editing the
main menu. However, Firefox still doesn't recognize a feed (the RSS icon says "Page has no feed for live bookmark"...). So I've still got something to do, apparently.

Strange indeed about the Administration menu being visible -- I also noticed now that that "logout" link is there whether I'm logged in or not. I didn't install this but I've messed around with it. Maybe a problem with permissions. Definitely a problem of a little knowlege being a dangerous thing. I see Sams sells a Postnuke book now. I may have to buy it.

As for the CMS dispute, I don't know what's up with that. It's the J school that hosts our SPJ site.

Thanks again.
Your RSS feed is at: http://indyprospj.iupui.edu/backend.php - T.
I'm pleased to see a Journalism group using Postnuke. The School of Journalism is trying to force Jagradio to use a home-grown CMS rather than something with a proven track record, like Postnuke.

Re: How do I enable RSS feeds on a Postnuke site?

Your RSS feed is at:

http://indyprospj.iupui.edu/backend.php

I dunno what's been done to your site, but ordinarily this backend.php link would be mentioned in the Footer Messages section of Administration > Settings.

You'll either have to create a new Admin Message that references the RSS feed, or add it into your Main Menu as a link as we've done on this site by editing Administration > Blocks > Main Menu.

It's odd that as an unregistered user I can see the link to the Administration menu even though I can't activate it. Who edited this Postnuke theme and/or created the site?

Re: How do I enable RSS feeds on a Postnuke site?

You shouldn't have to do anything to enable RSS feeds on a postnuke site. The default feed is www.example.com/backend.php

With an RSS compliant browser (like Mozilla Firefox), you should see an RSS logo (Firefox allows you to setup a "Live Bookmark" for an RSS enabled site) in your browser.
