Distro
I'm a newbie so don't thrash me if this is a stupid question.
Has anyone been involved in building a distro or ever thought about making a distro? If you have, what was the experience like? Difficult or easy? I found this web site that seemed pretty interserting.

You might try talking to Rob at Feather Linux. He was a one person development team. He recently decided he didn't have enough time to develop Feather and is looking to hand it over to someone else for development.

Maybe our LUG could adopt the project. We could rename it "CINLUX"Nah.

Why compete w/ Mark Lesh's Alchemy Linux?
(For those of you who don't know Mark, he was a long time member of the CINLUG board of directors and was also on the board of INLUC, the predecessor to CINLUG.)

I couldn't find anything there available to download. Do you have to be a member? Looks like releases aren't frequent anyway.
Anyone used Sorceror or SourceMage? What is the command syntax like? "Eye of crow and tooth of boar, chmod this file to 444?"

It appears nothing is going on at Alchemy or it's in startup mode. I would hate to start another distro unless you had something very unique to offer. There are already so many out there!
BTW - Interesting to note that Mepis (Warren Wolford) is now developing MepisLite as a Win98 replacement. That now brings the Mepis versions to at least 3 (MepisLite, SimplyMepis, ProMepis) with more to come. I think he also has a server version in the works. I don't know how he's going to manage it all!! He now has a software distributor also. Looks like he's really trying to elevate the distro.

I don't know if Mark has anything available to download yet. He started with Sorceror as the base for Alchemy iirc. Whatever build-it-yourself distro he was working with fragmented or stopped developing so he decided to make his own.

According to the front page of www.alchemylinux.com:
AlchemyLinux is a source code based distribution in the spirit of Sorcerer Linux. The implementation is not derived from Sorcerer, but from Linux From Scratch (LFS). It also incorporates a completely new XML-based build engine called Alchemy.
Mark's been working on it for several years but has been very busy with other things - it'll be interesting to see what he releases when he gets a chance.
