Maybe so, but the similarities are striking. See http://www.jmusheneaux.com/index24.htm for some cool screen shots of the various versions of Xerox ALTO/STAR/PARC, Mac OS 1.0-X, Windows 1.0-Longhorn.
I didn't write Moby Dick, but if I read Moby Dick, and it was the only story about a whale I had ever read, and then wrote a book about a whale there most likely would be similarities.
P.S. Read Moby Dick and other classics here for free: http://www.planetpdf.com/ebookarticle.asp?ContentID=6148
I'd also recommend the works of Edgar Allan Poe

Re: History of the GUI
I'd like the PDF, if you are a "premier subscriber" could you download it for me and email it to me?
