Question: rsync backup

Has anyone ever backed up from a M$ windoze box to linux using rsync?

Is there a free GUI program that helps facilitate this that anyone knows of?

Re:Question: rsync backup

Better yet, than bringing up a cygwin bash shell and running the backup.sh script...I wrote a quick little backup.bat script...double click and the backup runs...

@echo off
C:
chdir C:\cygwin\bin
bash -c "/usr/bin/rsync -av -e ssh --delete \"/cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings\" sauron@minastirith:/backups
pause

Hope folks find this useful...it certainly makes my life easy...

Re:Question: rsync backup

Cygwin with ssh and rsync installed works well enough!!!

The windows drives should get mounted under /cygdrive/c, cygdrive/d, etc.
This is what I was missing...couldn't figure out where my windoze files were under
the Cygwin bash shell.

Make sure they are getting mounted in binmode by running the mount command:
Output of mount:
c: on /cygdrive/c type user (binmode,noumount)
d: on /cygdrive/d type user (binmode,noumount)

If it doesn't say binmode run:
mount -b -f -s "c:/" "/cygdrive/c"
mount -b -f -s "d:/" "/cygdrive/d"

This is what I did to get it to work, and then wrote a quick script/procedure:

1. Make a directory /backups on the host machine "say cirithungol" user "sauron"
2. Make sure rsync is setup in xinetd and sshd is running on the linux host.
3. Install Cygwin on M$ box, and include ssh and rsync.
4. To backup windows "c:/Documents and Settings" I run a backup.sh script:

#! /usr/bin/sh
mount -b -f -s "c:/" "/cygdrive/c"
rsync -av -e ssh --delete "/cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings" sauron@cirithungol:/backups

This will backup ALL my personal files and my wife's files to another machine...which I need a larger hard-disk on ;>
I also installed rsync and openssh on my Zaurus to backup the entire device to the same area.
I also installed Cygwin rsync and ssh on my laptop to backup it's files to the Linux box. It is dual boot, so rsync/ssh is installed on that partition...

Now how to backup my Linux backup server...and where???

Ah well, who cares if it's hardisk fails, Linux is easy to restore...windoze is another ballgame.

Any comments on my backup scheme? Any other users have other ways of doing this, or better procedures???

Re:Question: rsync backup

I use Cygwin and ssh instead of putty. That way I can display X apps back to my windows box. rsync would be a better option as it gets only the parts that changed and knows the deleted files too. I saw that and didn't delve too deeply. I'd rather run the server on the Linux side and just rsync the files from the windows box as needed.

Also found this http://optics.ph.unimelb.edu.au/help/rsync/rsync_pc1.html
but it appears you can't use rsync to sync files on any place but c:/cygwin ? You get a bash shell and can't change to the regular C:/Documents and Settings/ directory etc. ?

I haven't - I've backed up windows machines (or files off of Windows machines) using Samba and secure copy. I use winscp - http://winscp.sf.net - or Putty for SSH/SCP on Windows and the standard file manager (and a samba server) for Samba backups. I'll search around and see what I can find out about rsync and Windows.
