Modem Help
While Linux MAY be able to made to work with certain types of WinModems, I agree that junking the Winmodem is the best idea.
I recommend an external serial port modem as the easiest type to set up in Linux. I haven't heard of any external serial port Winmodems.
I'm still a little wary of recommending a USB modem for you to use in Linux. Depending on the distribution you're running (and the kernel version), you may have USB problems.
