What is Cygwin and Cygwin/X?
Cygwin is a Linux-like environment for Windows. It consists of two parts:
- DLL (cygwin1.dll) which acts as a Linux API emulation layer providing substantial Linux API functionality.
- A collection of tools, which provide Linux look/feel.
Cygwin/X is a port of the X Window System.
- Consists of an X Server, X libs, and nearly all of the standard X clients, such as xterm, xhost, xdpyinfo, xfontsel, etc.
- Cygwin/X uses the Cygwin project which provides the API to Xlib and X clients.
Cygwin and Cygwin/X run under all recent versions of MS Windows (95/98/NT/2000/XP), and both are licensed under the GPL.
